Extract from the Wa Shong Yat Po newspaper.

Telegraphic instructions from Wai-wa-pu for proper settlement

of the Anti-Opium Regulations.

Recently Viceroy Yuen has received the following telegram from the Waimupu respecting the measures taken in the suppression of opium-smoking:-

With reference to your telegram "Kang* reporting that you had communicated with the British Consul and had repeatedly conferred with him, and that you had received from such Consul a despatch representing that the Regulations decided upon were over-drastic, that they affected trade prejudicially and were contrary to Treaty, and that he could not recognise them, we have found that in adopting any measures for the suppression of opium-smoking, such measures should conform with Treaty so as to avoid complaints. As the Regula- -tions respecting fees have not been finally settled, please give this matter your careful consideration, and report tele- -graphically to this Department of State for sanétion, so that complaints may be avoided.
